- by Maeve McMahon

Riding Out The Hurricane (Paperback)

"Riding Out the Hurricane" by Maeve McMahon, is a fictional account of actual events that the author witnessed and lived through in the wake and aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. These ingredients conspire to make McMahon’s first novel a compelling and rollercoaster experience.

"Riding Out the Hurricane" follows the storm through the eyes of a child, Jade, aged 12, and her grandmother, who keeps her faith despite Jade’s questions such as, "Is this hell?"

"The story is really about the resilience of human nature, courage and faith despite unbelievable circumstances," says McMahon, who went to New Orleans almost 30 years ago and set up a school in the African American community. St Leo the Great School, was based on the conviction that if children are given every opportunity to succeed in a quality school they can excel. The school won accolades from the state education board and from the White House for excellence. Many of its students have gone on to university and become professionals such as lawyers.

Sr Maeve had started another school, which opened its doors on 15 August 2005, just two weeks before Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29.
